4 Stars Great Elliptical machine for the price! very sturdy!
I did a LOT of research on ellipticals earlier this year, and after all of this, decided on the e55 from Sole. This thing is sturdy! I am 6′4 about 250 and was worried about the sturdiness of an elliptical, especially after tyring so many crappy models in different stores. Most of them rocked and felt like they were coming apart when I really got going fast. not this one. This thing was delivered in a HUGE box and is very heavy and akward to assemble. I didn’t have any help to get this thing inside or assembled, however, I managed to open the box in my garage and take it inside piece by piece. A little warning though: don’t plan on moving this thing AFTER you get it together, because it would be near impossible. Just bringing the components inside was awkward, but once inside, it took me about 3-4 hours to assemble. It’s not that difficult to figure out, but it’s awkward with no help.

I have now owned this model for 7-8 months and couldn’t be happier. I only have one complaint, and it’s probably my own fault, but it squeeks a little when I’m working out on it. The manual says that this is most likely due to a nut not being tightened as much as it should be, and to be honest, it isn’t THAT annoying. the squeeking is coming from the pedal, and isn’t a sign of cheap quality, just that I probably didn’t tighten it enough. for the money, I don’t think you can buy a better elliptical.

3 Stars Very Poor Assembly Instructions
If you are “assembly challenged” get someone else to assemble this machine because the instructions are very poor and you will go nuts trying to put this together. The very first bolts didn’t line up. There were a few instances where the part or bolt numbers were wrong (Try finding the part #25 in step 4 it’s really #24). Particularly frustrating was the electrical connections to the console. This was not diagrammed and poorly described. Then there were the screws from the inside of the machine. They do give you a little screw driver for those. Good luck if you have big hands.

The good news is – after three weekends assembling this thing, it does work very well and feels nice and solid.

4 Stars Great Machine!
I ordered this elliptical after months of researching on-line reviews and considering used equipment. I decided on the Sole thanks to good reviews on Treadmill Doctor and others and the E55 particularly because I got a good deal on it on Ebay (new and direct from Sole for the cost of the E35). It shipped in about 5 days; took another 2 or 3 to get it to my house. They delivered it to my garage and took away the pallet. The box was huge and looked filthy and beaten up. The product inside was fine but heavy. My husband and I took it out piece by piece (thanks to another reviewer’s recommendation) then pushed the box with the heaviest parts into the spare bedroom. It took a few minutes with two of us shoving the box across the floor and we were sweating before we even got the box into the room. Assembly took probably 3 hours (easily). What took us so long was getting the wiring through the mast; we used a wire coathanger taped to the wires and that was easy but in doing so we disruped two little wires that stick out of small holes in the mast–getting them back to their proper place took awhile. Also the small rubber grommets that protect those wires we found after we put everything together (they are in the package with the electrical cord–not in the box with the parts. Anyway, we got it all together and the ride is so smooth and quiet! We (husband and myself) are out of shape so for the first few days, we used only the weight of the flywheel (no incline no resistance) and 15 minutes was tough! Slowly we are getting stronger and increasing our time and endurance. This is a sturdy machine. The reviewer who said he felt it was unstable–I can’t imagine that. We love the machine; took off one star for the assembly difficulties but would give five stars for the machine after assembly.

1 month update:

Have used this elliptical every day for the last month and it’s still as quiet and smooth as the day we put it together. I use the manual setting to set my own incline and resistance; my husband uses the cardio and fatburner settings and it kicks both our butts. No problems with anything so far. BTW, we have it set up in a room with 8′ ceilings and we have ample headroom for a 6′ tall person to work out on.

1 Star So Far Not Even A 1-Star
The elliptical went together alright. There are some mislabeled items in the directions and a few parts that aren’t included or talked about. I used it for 20 minutes the night I put it together to test it out, some minor noises. I went through all of the documentation on noise problems and did everything it suggested. Nothing really improved. On top of that I now have a rattle noise coming from the Incline and Decline controls on the swing arms. I contacted Sole Customer Service about my problem on 9/7 and the only thing I can get is that my ticket has been ’sent to a technician’. I’ve had it for a week and so far it is one expensive clothes rack. Hopefully someone from Sole will get back to me soon.

Someone from Sole actually called me about a week later on the 16th. By that time I already arranged to have it exchanged with Amazon. Finally scheduled a date and time with CEVA to pick it up, made arrangements to be home, get the customary “We’re 30 minutes out” phone call, and come to find out they’re going to the wrong address, in the wrong state. So someone is ’supposed’ to get back to me to setup another day to have it picked up.

CEVA (Amazon’s Shipping Company) came today. No appointment, no phone call. They just showed up out of the blue. They destroyed my elliptical mat and I carried down just about everything myself, but hey it’s gone. They weren’t all that careful moving stuff either, as in probably more parts are broken now. Kinda disappointed nobody came with a sorry or we’ll replace it for you in regards to my elliptical mat being destroyed by CEVA.

My replacement Sole E55 Elliptical was dropped off today. Scuffed up like crazy, scratches on the black parts and huge black rub marks on the gray parts. To anyone putting this together I suggest using your own tools (metric ratchet will help out a lot if you have one) and an easy way to feed the wires through the center mast piece is to use your cellphone charger cable. During assembly keep in mind that you really want to get things right the first time so if you mess up and have to take things apart you’ll find the fit isn’t as snug (mainly the plastic protective pieces).

10/7/09

Well, 2-3 minutes this time before I found something wrong. Not a huge problem, but the incline buttons on the left swing arm don’t work. I looked back at all of the places where you plug in wires during assembly, disconnected, reattached everything, and double checked that everything was snug. Still didn’t work. Popped the swing arm top off (it’s soft plastic so flat tip takes it off easy) and saw the wire was unplugged. So I have about 4 hours of assembly and maybe 25 minutes of actual use over 2 machines. Hopefully it works great after I get that wire plugged back in, but not impressed so far.

10/16/09

Received a kit today to fix the swing arm incline button. It consists of a 2.5-3′ wire that runs through the swing arm (plugs into the incline button on one end and wire on side of center mast on the other), a thin spool of wire to snake wire, and an incline button (it’s just a paper thin piece of plastic). Invoice states if everything isn’t return I will be billed $600. Nice.

(2) 40 minute sessions on it and it’s back to making loud noises. Creaks like an old house at anything over a resistance level of 4 and makes a clapping noise at anything 3 or under. In my experience that either leads to some major being broken in the long run and in the short run black out rage fits. I talked to Sole today and asked for it to either be fixed or taken away. At this point I wouldn’t recommend a Sole brand anything to anyone. I hope this isn’t simply a case of you get what you pay for. My $400-500 treadmill lasted 7 yrs until it broke and it was cheaper for the company to give me a new one over fixing it.

4 Stars Works great, with minor modification
I’m pleased with this product. I use it to read novels while working out on the elliptical machine. It works for any sized book, including very thick hardcovers. I did have to make a slight modification, on the advice of another reviewer, of removing the rubber endcaps on the top two prongs. This makes turning pages much easier because the pages don’t stick/catch. But these pop right off, so no problem. I’ve been using it happily ever since.

3 Stars Not bad, not great
I have used my flip clip a couple of times, but it is so flimsy, I am afraid to break it. So far I have used it on large books, and so I use it to hold one side of the book open, because it won’t fit on the top or bottom. Time will tell how long this will last. As I said, it feels pretty flimsy. I may just end up buying one of those large clear book holders, however cumbersome it may be to carry to/from the gym.

1 Star does not work on the treadmill
I was looking for a product to use while reading on my treadmill.

This product is not made for that purpose and should not be advertised as a treadmill book holder but rather as just a “book holder”. There is no way to clip it onto the treadmill so that it won’t fall during a workout.

4 Stars Good for music books
I used this book holder to hold open music books on my piano. New book bindings are often too tight and make it hard to read the music when the pages fold up on its own.

I leave this tool on the new books I buy, and the music books are much easier to manage, and turn pages. Its not so easy to turn pages with the device on all the pages, so I leave 4-5 pages out of the clamp so I can turn them while playing the music without fumbling, while the rest of the pages stay back under the clamps and don’t flip the book closed.

4 Stars Good value, but assy could have gone smoother
This is for my wife to rehab her surgically repaired knee. She is happy with it so far. It’s seems sturdy and smooth, especially considering how cheap, er… cost-effective it is. We just got it, so I can’t comment on the durability.

Assembly should take 30 minutes; however, I had to brake out some extra tools. The control wire was cut; it looked like it had been pinched and cut during packaging. The holes on the bottom of the frame in the rear didn’t line up, so I little brute force, prying and a hammer was needed. Other than that, some of the fasteners could have been located a few cm’s further away from other members to allow a socket. Hey, what do expect froma a cheap machine designed and built in China.

4 Stars decent eliptical
This product was relatively easy to assemble, the diagrams and instructions were very clear and concise. It does tend to squeak a little when someone over 200 lbs. is using it, but besides that it’s a pretty good quality eliptical for the price, though the heart-rate monitor is not at all accurate.

4 Stars excellent, well priced elliptical
I am quite erratic when it comes to working out. I’ll admit it. I’ve had gym memberships since I was a kid, and I have a hard time sticking to it. Right before I bought this merit elliptical, I had a $750 per year gym membership, and I hated going. I hated multiple things: the tvs attached to each machine, always broken. The idea of the germs, creeped me out. Also thinking I was being watched and judged..(and I can assure you, the boys were watching the girls in the hot pants and sports bra, not me, who was in an old band T-shirt and work out pants)well, its just not my bag of fun. So I figured I could get a few key pieces and make myself a little home gym. Then really, what excuse is there?(yes, I can still come up with some, but they tend to be a lot more ridiculous).

So I poked around and found this model in the 300 dollars price range. I went to a sporting equipment store to try a few out. I picked this one because it felt sturdy, smooth and comfortable for my 5′4 height, and I liked the price. I supervised my boyfriend putting it together — ok, so I helped a couple times. It took under 2 hours. Now, I can hop on, watch my own tv, sweat to my hearts desire, and don’t have to worry about my appearance or who’s around me. If I’m thirsty — I get a drink at my own fridge instead of paying a machine. Wanna wipe your face off? the bathroom is a hop and a jump down the hall. No more public ladies locker room with scary naked old women prancing around. To be honest, if you have at least a 5×5 space available to make a little work out area(this and a yoga mat and a few weights are all you need!), totally go for it. You feel a lot better when you’re done, and this is 1/2 the price of a year at the gym. I’ve had my merit elliptical about 3 years now.

Some nice things about this model, I like the different tensions to choose from, and you just turn the knob. It takes batteries to run the little mile/time monitor. Easy as pie to understand. The only thing, the heart rate monitor doesn’t give an accurate reading for me. So I just picked up an inexpensive heart rate monitor watch here on amazon. One small tip: keep the tracks clean, and you’ll be smooth sailing. Sometimes dust or random stuff can end up there and trip up the smooth factor a bit.

5 Stars So far so good
We bought this Merit 715E elliptical trainer and it took my husband and nephew about an hour to put it together. It is very very quiet and seems very solid. We are very happy with it so far. What’s kind of neat is it has a place where you can put your thumb and it measures your heart rate.

I had this professionally assembled. Within 30 days of use started making clanking sound from inside of right wheel assembly. Left pedal gives a squeek all the time. I have requested customer service to attend to this. I hope the issues would be taken care of.

1 Star proform crosswalk 8.0 ripoff
ProForm elliptical machine not worth the hassle when it breaks down and parts are needed. Customer service is non available (your call is very important to us) is a joke. After holding for 15 minutes the recording says we will call you back, you will not lose your place in line. Nobody ever calls. When you finally do get thru and order the part, it is “on back order” just long enough to let your warranty expire. They have to ship it from China where the machine is made. Total ripoff for sure.

2 Stars DO NOT BUY
I got this elliptical for Christmas. It was broken from day one. It took ProForm 1 month to get it running and then it broke down again with in 7-8 weeks of being fixed the first time. My advice run as fast as you can!!! ProForm does not believe in fixing things in a timely manner. You will be on hold for more than 15 minutes and then be told they will get back to you. I could have bought the elliptical that is utilized at my gym for $95 more which is higher quality and it WORKS. I was really disappointed. I have owned my ProForm treadmill for 10 years no problems with it. I tried to stay a loyal customer but after purchasing this I will never purchase another piece of ProForm equipment.

5 Stars GREAT WORKOUT
I love this machine. I have really bad knees and have tried out other types of elliptical machines, which cause knee pain 5 minutes into the workout, but with this machine 45 minutes just fly by. I could not believe how easy 45 minutes on this elliptical are. I also own a rowing machine and a treadmill, this is my FAVORITE!!! I highly recommend!

4 Stars Good Buy For The Money
Just received the crosswalk about 2 weeks ago. The instructions were very explanatory on the assembly and it took approximately an hour to put together. Thus far, I have enjoyed the crosswalk as it does not impact my knees as other ellipticals have done in the past. Looking forward to the coming weeks. So far, I consider this a good buy for the money.

5 Stars Great Machine at a Great Price
I have had the 460 for about a month now. It is a wonderful machine to exercise on. My Wife and I use it at least once per day and we find that it is smooth and easy to use. The variable stride makes all the difference. We tried other Elliptical Trainers that do not have that feature and they were harder for my Wife to use, since she is only 5 feet tall.

Assembly of the machine took about three hours at an easy pace. It was not too complicated. It was comforting to me that all the complicated mechanisms and all the electronics were allready assembled. Therefore, really all “assembly” consisted of was to bolt the chasis together and bolt on the features. I downloaded the detailed assembly manual from [...].

The machine pedals stand about 8 inches off the ground. We found that an old 4 inch aerobic step next to the machine (”The Step” which we bought on Amazon) provided a great small step that makes the machine easier to use. “The Step” is the same color gray as the 460 and actually looks like it was designed to be used with it. It does not interfere with the pedals at all and it makes it much easier for my Wife to use.

I’d recommend the Schwinn 460 to anyone.

So far this product has met or exceeded my expectation. Item arrived intact, no damage. Instructions made it easy to assemble. Took about two hours. Using the elliptical it works as described as well as the electronics. It seems to have been well built and I anticipate getting several years of use from it.

5 Stars Excellent Elliptical Machine !!!
On Sep 28, 2009, after careful thought and consideration of other machines/brands that I have seen at sporting good stores, fitness centers and studied via the web online, I went ahead and made the purchase for the Schwinn 460 Variable Stride Elliptical Trainer. What sold me was the many positive reviews, the variable stride feature, the 2″-26″ stride capability, price and reputation. This is a very well constructed and well thought out, engineered machine. I am a 45 year old male, in excellent physical fitness, weigh 155 lbs. @ 5′ 8″. Recently I have been having pain in my hips from street running. Not wanting to hinder my fitness routine, I decided that an elliptical machine may be the remedy. I received my Amazon order via lift truck and had it placed in my garage. The machine is WELL packed in its box. In fact, it took nearly 30 minuets to unpack it as the machine is very well protected inside. I brought the pieces inside one by one which was not much of a hassle as each piece was light enough to carry with the exception of the body. My daughter, 5′2″ 95 lbs was able to help me lift one end of it to get it in. The instructions were very easy to read and understand. With the exception of needing a 17mm socket and ratchet, you will not need any other tools. It took me 1 1/2 hour to get this machine fired up (it may take others longer who are not as equipped mechanically). Oh boy, was I pleased. After 4 days of using this machine, I am soooo happy that I made this choice. My hip pain has subsided and I am loving this new fitness machine. The LED touch screen display rocks and the programming is top notch. My daughter who attends a major university said that this machine is better than the elliptical machines they have in their fitness centers on campus! I highly recommend this to anyone who is thinking about an elliptical and cannot make up their minds. This is a great machine and an excellent buy! BTW: Schwinn Fitness is a brand of Nautilus who’s other brands include Bowflex, Stairmaster and others!

Not perfect but a very good machine. Better than a 4-star but not quite a 5-star but I don’t see a half-star option in the ratings. I would make this purchase again.

Note to new buyers: get this where you want it and assemble it there. The Schwinn 460 is very heavy – you won’t want to move it very far.

5 Stars Well built machine
This is my second elliptical machine. I basically wore out a standard pro-form elliptical machine and researched many of the new machines on the market. This Schwinn 460 with the variable stride looked to be one of the best. After purchasing and receiving the package.Which is over 200 lbs. Assembly was straightforward and only took about an hour. I am a technician by trade so it may have been easier for me than for some. I have been using the machine for about two weeks now and I am impressed by how well built it is. The variable stride feature adapts to your individual stride length automatically. My wife and I both are using it and would recommend this machine to anyone. It keeps track of two individuals workout history and has different workout programs to keep it interesting. All around a good machine and worth the price.

2 Stars Customer Be Damned: Read German, Or else!!!
It is truly tragical that apparently absolutely no one within the United States has made a detailed and accurate English translation, both of the assembly instructions and of the operation procedures, for this elliptical cross trainer.

Additionally, many small suggestions which would save both the American distributor of this German product (sited in Virginia) and the new user, go unmentioned within the instuction package received with the machine itself (such as do not crank down certain bolts until such time as you have ensured that the computer is operational). Considering the price of the machine (about $700 USD) matters such as these makes for much stress, both in assembly of the product (you will have to figure it out largely unasisted) and for its subsequent use (as, for example, if your computer actually fails to start up when the unit is assembled, as did mine). And, talking to someone at the Virginia distribution site was a less that desirable experience as well (once you actually get through and speak to an actual human being, whom may then leave you on the line for prolonged periods, as did my respondant).

But, amazingly, the machine itself is a dream, once one is past all the bad stuff, as outlined above. Smooth and very useful and it has but a small footprint as well. While the computer is more complicated than that on other similar machines (and the associated manual is less than user-friendly), both the heart-rate monitor and the system timer work like a charm, once one gets the hang of using them.

One can only hope that the problems indicated above will be satisfactorily resolved in the near future, for the machine itself is well worth the effort and the cost to do so is entirely reasonable for what is offered to the comsumer. Mel Hollins/September 18, 2009

5 Stars quality product
This elliptical trainer is designed and built in Germany and is rock solid. Even purchasing probably the lowest end product, it is quality built. The monitor was confusing and the directions are not the best, but it is not so complicated that we can’t figure it out. The noise level is non-existent. The footprint makes it possible to put in any room. The warranty was one of the best I found. I will reccommend this company and their products to everyone.

5 Stars Whisper quiet and built to last
It took a while to figure out how to put it all together, but it was all doable. I thought I was missing some of the screws but they were in a holding position in some of the parts, so everything was there. The “cosmetic parts” (pieces of plastic that cover the joints) were tedious to apply. Still, it was all worth it in terms of the finished product. The assembled unit is strong, smooth, and silent. I had tested several brands in sporting goods stores but this is superior in terms of strength, ride, and warranty. The display panel is nothing fancy. There are no major bells and whistles. No gimmicks. But definitely high quality unit that is built to last.

5 Stars Sturdy and silent for compact sized elliptical
Sturdy, compact elliptical machine. Very tedious to put together as instructions are somewhat unclear (ie. difficult to tell which washers go where). 2 wheels in the front make it easy to maneuver. Plug in for the monitor (no batteries needed). Elliptical motion glides very smoothly and is virtually silent. Looks great, the only complaint is that the plastic coverings are difficult to install securely as they do not fit perfectly and the screws do not penetrate the plastic well enough for a seamless fit. But for the quality and overall workmanship, would recommend.

I didn’t buy it through Amazon but I wanted to chime in.. I bought it at a local fitness store and after doing research , I found that the Germans can even make a good eliptical machine . Durable, quiet, and an overall good cardio workout!
